Magic of the Mind
In a world where magic is not supernatural power but a discipline of cognition, Mara discovers that the Academy’s ancient rules are not the laws of reality—merely the safest way to think.
The Bounds of Concordance
Every human mind has the innate capacity to influence physical reality. Incantations, gestures, symbols, and rituals contain no inherent power of their own—they serve as cognitive scaffolding, guiding practitioners into precise mental states.
For centuries, the Academy has standardized these techniques into safe, teachable forms. But when Mara struggles with standard incantations because they fragment her thinking, an accidental substitution of a childhood phrase tears a porcelain cup straight through multiple stone floors.
Mara did not lift the cup with brute force. She conceptualized its original position as unoccupied. As she investigates further, she uncovers sealed archives from the pre-Concordance era—and begins to realize that institutional orthodoxy was built to conceal a catastrophe, not the true limits of human thought.
Core Principles
Cognitive Scaffolding
Spoken words and stylized gestures carry zero magical energy; they are mental conduits designed to eliminate cognitive contradiction.
Conservation & Energy
Magic cannot ignore the physical laws of conservation. Large workings draw upon regulated mechanical, thermal, and ambient reservoirs.
Cognitive Pluralism
Standardized forms ensure public safety, but individual mental models can unlock distinct relational effects—if properly bounded.
